Ahhhh, que magnifico! Also, Happy St. Patty's Day!!!! Today was a wonderful breakthrough. Last night we all worked together to create an idea, we all stayed up until midnight spending time crafting. Today we implemented the idea and it was truly a success. We taught the children about St. Patrick's Day, emphsizing Ireland, not jsut the United States. Hugo engaged the students with a story and then allowed their minds to run with a clue based scavenger hunt.
It is truly amazing to see how much the children desire to learn anything and everything. It is surprising to see that these children who are taken from the streets are so hopeful for education and excited to learn.
After reflecting today with the group it seems that we all have seen how it can be viewed as selfish on the volunteers to get such an impacting factor, but this is something that is completely mutual. We are not just seeing how life is, but we are placing hope in these children and allowing them to know that people outside of their community are interested in learning as well. To see the smile and the emotion that these children are able to give, even though they do not receive much at home is surprising, yet impacting. What many of us are taking away from Casa Esperanza is the gratification of what we have, and the understanding and desire to help locally amongst our own community and also keep improving these service learning projects, especially if desired to continue in Panama with the same organizations. I cannot describe how wonderful these children are and what an amazing impact just spending time with people can be.
