Primer dia en Casa Esperanza-Hugo Castro
After a couple of days in Panama, we had the chance to finally start working in our service projects. We visit Casa Esperanza, a place where they promote the reduction of child labor in areas at risk. When we first got there the children were very shy towards us, but as the time passed they opened a lot more. I played chess with this kid the entire time, he was eager to learn new moves and by the end he seemed to understand the game a lot better. It was really cool to see other children coming to see us play and express some interest in learning how to play. Everybody seemed to enjoy their time there; the kids had an amazing time playing with us, and we were deeply moved by them. I can't personally wait to go back and spend more time with them. Ask them questions, teaching them English, play soccer with them and most important of all... make a difference in their present and their future.
After we left Casa Esperanza, we went to visit a policlinic from the Department of Health. It reminded me of some of the clinics back in Colombia, there were lack of resources and people to be able to serve the population in an efficient manner. The physical therapy unit was also used to treat children with learning disabilities, some of their equipment needed to be replaced or fixed. Even though they had all these problems against them, they always did their job the best way possible. It just makes me think how privileged we are to have access to high quality healthcare in the United States, but no means to afford it. In Panama, the healthcare is more affordable for people but it’s not the best quality.
